The 37-year-old has not started our last three games – which all ended in victories. He played off the bench against Leicester City, showing better skills on the ball than Marcus Rashford.

However, when it comes to scoring, relying on a young and fit Martial – who has proven his mettle in pre-season – would be a safer bet than waiting for Ronaldo to re-discover his form.

As evident against Leicester, Ronaldo is far from being fully match-fit and the lack of pre-season is clearly having a toll on him.
