Erik ten Hag Finally Explains Why He Subbed On Harry Maguire After Own Goal Against Sevilla

When asked about why he made the critical substitutions in the draw against Sevilla, Erik ten Hag told BT Sport: “We had to make some subs with injuries like Rafa [Raphael Varane] at half time.

“Also, we had to sub Anthony Martial as it was his first start since coming back. We had to bring off Antony and Bruno as they were on bookings. So, we had to make some subs. Then we lose control in an unlucky moment and we switched off.

“Then we had another unlucky moment with Lisandro Martinez and we’re down to 10 and then we conceded a second own goal. It’s bad luck and we have to deal with it.”

Ten Hag making all five substitutes resulted in United playing with 10 men towards the end of the game, which gave Sevilla confidence to find the late equalizer. The result means Man United must now win the second leg to move into the Europa League semi-finals.
